Lisey's Story

Also posted here.

I am giving up on this book. :(

I hate DNF's but I actually found myself avoiding the reading of this book today so that is a sign I should just let it go.

I didn't have any problem with the writing style. I had a problem with the fact that Lisey's interaction with Dooley and the flashbacks to Scott's childhood were images I don't like having in my mind but I can't get rid of them.

Maybe Stephen King is too good at his job. I like spooky, I like creepy, I like mystery, I like paranormal. I want to say it's because I was feeling hopeless and sad while reading this but I certainly wasn't dancing while I read "The Road." I don't know what it is. I just didn't like it.

I have only read one other book by Stephen King("It") years ago. I finished and though I don't remember loving it, I don't remember being as bugged by it as this one.

I guess you can file me under the category of "Not a Stephen King Fan" and no satisfaction in crossing it off my list.

That's too bad. Perhaps he's just not for everyone, and there is nothing wrong with that. Or maybe it just wasn't the right time for you to read this particular book. Who knows, maybe you'll want to take another whack at it some other time.

Kookie- Thanks. I really wanted to like it. Especially in light of the two previous good reviews. I am thinking his style is just not for me. I probably wouldn't commit to read another by him.

I have never heard anyone be "grey" about King--it's either LOVE or HATE.
I know what you mean about WANTING to like something because it seems everyone else loves it. I have several like that, and I wonder "WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!"

I had to laugh that It was your other King choice--that is hands down the absolute freakiest most terrifying novel EVER, and I was only able to read it one time.

Dana-That's exactly what I thought. Almost every other reviewer that I have read has loved this book so what is wrong with me?????

I don't remember "It" that well. I read it quite a few years ago. Probably just as well...LOL

I love Dean Koontz so maybe I was expecting similarities.

King just seems so much darker to me.

Sometimes I really love King, and sometimes he just misses the mark.

This is on my list to read, too, and I hope I like it better than you did, but I wanted to let you know that I use the exact same measure of whether I should give up on a book -- if I find myself avoiding reading. Reading should be something you look forward to with pleasure, not as a chore, right? And life is too short to read something you're not enjoying.
